Charming Kokeshi Dolls
Posted: Aug 22 2014
Traditional Kokeshi dolls are handmade by artists, so each one is slightly different. Look carefully at their charming faces when you next visit the Storio - one may speak to you more than another.
It is thought Kokeshi originated in the Tohoku region of Japan, and the floral and linear patterns on their kimono are very distinctive to the area in which they are made.
Although commonly ornamental, Kokeshi dolls may also have spiritual significance for some Japanese people, and are often thought to be lucky charms, useful for warding off fire.
